Computer communications or computer network is the transmission of data from one computer to another, or from one device to another. A communications device is any machine that assists data transmission. 

Communications networks are essentila attribute of the information society with high socio-economic value as they contribute to the correct operations of many critical services (from healthcare to finance and transportation). Internet is the core of today's computer-communication. This has transformed the Internet, from a robust network for data transfer between computers, to a global, content-rich, communication and information system where contents are increasingly generated by the users, and distributed according to human social relations.

A computer communication networks is a system containing any combination of computers, computer terminals, printers, audio or visual display devices, or telephones interconnected by telecommunications equipment or cables: used to transmit or receive information. 

It is visually Impossible for the average person to spend 24 hours directly or indirectly without using computer network.

Examples of computer networks are:

• Banking
• Transportation
• Education
• Telecommunications

To better understand computer networks you should be able to define the following terms

• Computer Networks: These are computers connected together for the purpose of sharing resources such as Internet, Printer, Databases etc. 
• Local Area Network: A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and related devices that share a common communications line or wireless link to a server. LAN encompasses computers and peripherals connected to a server within a small geographic area such as an office building or home.
• Wide Area Network (WAN): A computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area. Typically, a WAN consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs). Computers connected to a wide-area network are often connected through public networks, such as the telephone system. 
• Personal Area Network: A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for data transmission amongst devices such as computers, telephones, tablets etc.
